Shift performance is affected and eventually you have to believe the TIP will suffer greater wear and failure if the fluid is never changed.

Threre are several threads debating the use of non-OEM fluids (including member reports on performance and mileage of Red line and Mobil1 ATF in the Tip), instructions on how to go about doing it yourself, and even a thread on assembling a DIY tool (in the info base) for adding transmission fluid to the TIP.
At the very least get your dealer to replace the OEM fluid at around 60K (if you drive your car hard, sooner). If you are handy with a wrench and more daring you can replace the fluid yourself with a full synthetic (Red Line / Mobil1), save some $$ and perhaps get better performance. I've been running Redline D4 fluid for 11K in a Tip that has 131,000K on the clock and think it is great."
